Collection: Retinoids

Retinoids are the gold standard in anti-ageing skincare — the only topical ingredient class with decades of clinical evidence for reversing photoageing, stimulating collagen, and improving skin texture. From entry-level retinol to advanced retinaldehyde, this is the full range.

The Best Retinoids — Retinol, Retinal & Advanced-Protocol Retinoid

Retinoids are the most evidence-based active ingredient in skincare. Decades of clinical research confirm that vitamin A derivatives — including retinol, retinaldehyde (retinal), and Advanced-Protocol Retinoid — stimulate collagen production, accelerate cell turnover, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, fade pigmentation, and improve overall skin texture. No other single ingredient has this breadth of proven benefit. Retinoids are the cornerstone of any serious anti-ageing routine.

But not all retinoids are equal. The form, concentration, and formulation matter enormously. Our clinician selects retinoid products based on your skin type, tolerance level, and goals — from gentle introductory retinols to the most potent clinical-strength options available. Whether you're starting your first retinoid or stepping up to something stronger, this is the edit that matters most.

Clinician's Recommendation

If you've never used a retinoid, start with Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3 or 6 — retinaldehyde is the fastest-converting non-prescription form of vitamin A, meaning you get stronger results with less irritation than standard retinol. Once you've built tolerance over 8–12 weeks, step up to Crystal Retinal 10 or 20. For patients with stubborn pigmentation, deep wrinkles, or acne scarring, Advanced-Protocol Retinoid is the next level — available through a free written skin assessment. The key is starting slowly and building up. Retinoid results are cumulative and reward patience.

  • Retinol (Beginner)

The most common over-the-counter retinoid. Retinol converts to retinaldehyde, then to retinoic acid in the skin — a two-step process that makes it gentler but slower-acting. Ideal for sensitive skin or first-time retinoid users. Effective at 0.3–1% concentrations. Results typically visible after 12+ weeks of consistent use.

  • Retinaldehyde / Retinal (Intermediate)

One step closer to active retinoic acid than retinol, retinaldehyde is up to 11x faster-converting. It delivers results comparable to low-dose Advanced-Protocol Retinoid without a prescription. Medik8's Crystal Retinal range (strengths 1, 3, 6, 10, 20) is the gold standard — allowing you to gradually increase potency as your skin adapts. The best balance of efficacy and tolerability.

  • Advanced-Protocol Retinoid (Advanced)

The most potent retinoid available. Advanced-Protocol Retinoid is active retinoic acid — no conversion required, so it works immediately at full strength. Clinically proven to reverse photoageing, treat acne, and significantly reduce pigmentation. Available through consultation with our clinician, who will determine the right strength (0.025%, 0.05%, or 0.1%) for your skin.

How to Start Using a Retinoid

Week 1–2: Apply your retinoid 2 nights per week after cleansing on dry skin. Follow with a barrier-supporting moisturiser.

Week 3–4: Increase to 3 nights per week if tolerated. Mild redness, dryness, and peeling are normal — this is your skin adapting.

Week 5+: Gradually build to nightly use as tolerated. Always use SPF 30+ during the day — retinoids increase UV sensitivity. In the morning, pair with a vitamin C serum for antioxidant protection and brightening.

Key rule: Never apply retinoids to damp or broken skin. If irritation becomes uncomfortable, reduce frequency — don't stop entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions About Retinoids

What is the difference between retinol and retinal?

Both are forms of vitamin A, but they sit at different points on the conversion pathway to active retinoic acid. Retinol requires two conversion steps in the skin (retinol → retinaldehyde → retinoic acid). Retinaldehyde (retinal) requires only one step, making it up to 11 times faster-acting than retinol at equivalent concentrations. This means retinal delivers stronger results with a comparable or even better tolerability profile. Medik8's Crystal Retinal range is the most advanced retinaldehyde line available in the UK.

Is retinoid purging normal?

Yes. When you start a retinoid, increased cell turnover can bring existing congestion to the surface faster, causing temporary breakouts known as 'purging.' This is different from a reaction — purging occurs in your usual breakout areas and typically resolves within 4–6 weeks. If you experience breakouts in new areas, widespread irritation, or symptoms lasting beyond 6 weeks, consult our clinician to adjust your protocol.

Can I use retinoids with vitamin C?

Yes — they complement each other well. The simplest approach is to split them: vitamin C in the morning (for antioxidant protection and brightening) and your retinoid in the evening (for renewal and repair). This avoids any potential pH interaction and ensures each ingredient works at its best. This AM/PM split is the foundation of the routines we recommend at Stratum Clinic.

How long until I see results from a retinoid?

Improved skin texture and radiance are often noticeable within 4–6 weeks. Visible reduction in fine lines typically appears at 8–12 weeks. Significant improvement in pigmentation, deeper wrinkles, and firmness can take 4–6 months. Retinoid results are cumulative — the longer you use them, the better your skin gets. Consistency and patience are key.

What strength of Medik8 Crystal Retinal should I start with?

If you're new to retinoids entirely, start with Crystal Retinal 1 or 3. If you've used retinol before and tolerated it well, Crystal Retinal 6 is a good starting point. Crystal Retinal 10 and 20 are for experienced retinoid users looking for maximum results without a prescription. Each strength is designed to be used for 8–12 weeks before stepping up. Our clinician can advise on the right entry point for your skin.

Do I need a consultation for Advanced-Protocol Retinoid?

Yes — Advanced-Protocol Retinoid requires a consultation with our clinician. It's the most potent retinoid available and needs to be prescribed at the right strength for your skin type and concerns. Consultations are free, take around 15 minutes, and allow us to build a complete protocol including supporting products (cleanser, moisturiser, SPF) to maximise results and minimise irritation. All Medik8 Crystal Retinal products can be purchased directly without a consultation. For an advanced non-prescription alternative, consider Medik8's r-Retinoate range, which uses encapsulated retinoic acid esters.
