The Best Products for Acne & Breakouts

Acne isn't just a teenage problem — adult breakouts, hormonal acne, and persistent congestion are among the most common concerns we see in clinic. Spots, blackheads, and cystic breakouts are driven by excess sebum, bacterial overgrowth, and sluggish cell turnover. Off-the-shelf cleansers and spot treatments can help mild breakouts, but moderate to severe acne requires a targeted system that addresses all three root causes simultaneously.

That's why we recommend the Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. system as the foundation for treating acne. Combined with a Advanced-Protocol Retinoid to accelerate cell turnover, a lightweight hydrator to maintain barrier function, and daily broad-spectrum SPF, this expert-selected protocol delivers clearer skin — typically within 8 to 12 weeks. Advanced-protocol items are subject to clinical assessment and dispensed by HealthXChange (GPhC-registered UK pharmacy).

Clinician's Recommendation

For active acne, I recommend the Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. system as a complete protocol rather than individual spot treatments. It combines a 2% salicylic acid cleanser, a pore therapy toner with solubilised benzoyl peroxide, and a therapeutic moisturiser — each step targeting a different driver of breakouts. Where clinically appropriate I add a Advanced-Protocol Retinoid (subject to clinical assessment, dispensed by HealthXChange) to accelerate cell turnover and prevent pore blockage, plus a lightweight hydrator to keep the barrier intact while the actives work. This systems approach consistently outperforms standalone acne products in my clinical experience.

  • Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO)

The most effective topical antibacterial for acne. Benzoyl peroxide kills C. acnes bacteria on contact, reduces inflammation, and — unlike antibiotics — bacteria cannot develop resistance to it. The Obagi CLENZIderm system uses a patented solubilised form of BPO that penetrates into the pore rather than sitting on the surface, making it significantly more effective than standard benzoyl peroxide washes.

  • Salicylic Acid (BHA)

A beta-hydroxy acid that is oil-soluble, meaning it penetrates into pores to dissolve the sebum and dead skin cells that cause blockages. At 2% concentration, salicylic acid is clinically proven to reduce blackheads, whiteheads, and inflammatory acne. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help calm redness. The CLENZIderm Daily Care Foaming Cleanser delivers 2% salicylic acid as the first step of the protocol.

  • Advanced-Protocol Retinoid (Vitamin A)

The gold standard for preventing acne at its source. A Advanced-Protocol Retinoid accelerates cell turnover, preventing dead skin cells from accumulating and blocking pores. It also reduces post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark marks left by breakouts) and improves overall skin texture. Available following a written skin assessment and subject to clinical assessment; dispensed by HealthXChange (GPhC-registered UK pharmacy) — this is what separates a clinical acne protocol from a cosmetic one.

  • Niacinamide & Barrier Support

Acne treatments can compromise the skin barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, and rebound breakouts. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) at 5%+ regulates sebum production, reduces inflammation, and strengthens the barrier. A lightweight, non-comedogenic hydrator is essential alongside active acne treatments to keep the skin resilient and prevent the irritation that makes acne worse.

How to Build an Acne Routine

AM: CLENZIderm Daily Care Foaming Cleanser (2% salicylic acid) → Lightweight hydrator / niacinamide serum → SPF 30–50 (non-comedogenic, reapply every 2 hours in sun).

PM: CLENZIderm Daily Care Foaming Cleanser → CLENZIderm Pore Therapy (BPO) → Advanced-Protocol Retinoid (build from 2–3 nights per week, subject to clinical assessment) → CLENZIderm Therapeutic Moisturiser or lightweight barrier cream.

Expect a purging phase in weeks 2–6 as the Advanced-Protocol Retinoid accelerates turnover and existing congestion surfaces faster. This is temporary and a sign the protocol is working. Most patients see significant clearing by week 8–12.

Frequently Asked Questions About Acne Treatments

What causes acne in adults?

Adult acne is driven by a combination of excess sebum production, bacterial overgrowth (C. acnes), sluggish cell turnover that blocks pores, and inflammation. Hormonal fluctuations — particularly androgens — are the most common trigger in adult women, which is why breakouts often flare around the jawline and chin. Stress, diet, and unsuitable skincare products can also contribute. Unlike teenage acne, adult acne tends to be more inflammatory and persistent, which is why a clinical protocol works better than spot treatments. If your primary concern is the dark marks left by past breakouts rather than active acne, see our Pigmentation & Uneven Tone collection.

How long does it take to clear acne?

With a clinician-prescribed protocol including CLENZIderm, Advanced-Protocol Retinoid, and supporting products, most patients see meaningful improvement in 8–12 weeks. Mild acne may respond faster (4–6 weeks), while severe or cystic acne can take 4–6 months of sustained treatment. A temporary purging phase in weeks 2–6 is common when starting Advanced-Protocol Retinoid — this is existing congestion surfacing faster, not new breakouts. Consistency is critical — stopping treatment early is the most common reason acne returns.

What is the Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. system?

CLENZIderm M.D. is Obagi's expert-selected acne system designed to treat breakouts at every stage. It includes three products: a 2% salicylic acid foaming cleanser to clear pore blockages, a pore therapy toner with solubilised benzoyl peroxide (BPO) that penetrates into the follicle to kill bacteria, and a therapeutic moisturiser that hydrates without clogging pores. The system's patented BPO delivery technology makes it significantly more effective than standard benzoyl peroxide products — the active reaches the bacteria inside the pore, not just on the surface.

What is acne purging and is it normal?

Purging is a temporary increase in breakouts that occurs when you start a retinoid like Advanced-Protocol Retinoid. The accelerated cell turnover pushes existing blocked pores and microcomedones (tiny, invisible blockages) to the surface faster than they would naturally appear. Purging typically happens in your usual breakout areas and lasts 2–6 weeks. It's a sign the treatment is working. If you experience breakouts in completely new areas, widespread irritation, or symptoms beyond 6–8 weeks, consult our clinician to adjust your protocol. Note that rosacea can sometimes mimic acne with papules and pustules — if redness and flushing are your main symptoms, our Sensitivity & Rosacea collection may be more appropriate.

Do I need a moisturiser if I have oily, acne-prone skin?

Yes — this is one of the biggest misconceptions about acne. Skipping moisturiser strips the barrier, triggers rebound oil production, and makes acne treatments more irritating. The key is choosing the right moisturiser: lightweight, non-comedogenic, and free from heavy oils or fragrances. A barrier-supporting hydrator with ingredients like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, or ceramides keeps the skin balanced while your acne actives work. This is especially important when using Advanced-Protocol Retinoid and benzoyl peroxide, which can both cause dryness.

Do I need a consultation for acne products?

The over-the-counter products in this collection can be purchased directly. However, Advanced-Protocol Retinoid — which significantly improves acne outcomes by preventing pore blockage at the source — requires a consultation with our clinician. Consultations are free, take around 15 minutes, and allow us to assess your acne severity, skin type, and any contraindications before building a personalised protocol. When you purchase the full CLENZIderm + Advanced-Protocol Retinoid + hydrator + SPF protocol after consultation, you receive 10% off your entire order.
