Obagi Systems

Obagi Medical Systems — Advanced-Protocol Skin Transformation

Obagi Medical pioneered the systems-based approach to skincare — and for good reason. Individual products treat symptoms. Systems treat the root cause. Each Obagi system is designed as a complete protocol where every product works synergistically: cleansers prepare the skin, actives target the concern, and support products protect and maintain results. This is the difference between cosmetic improvement and genuine skin transformation.

Browse the full Obagi Medical range or explore the systems below. We carry the full range of Obagi systems: Nu-Derm for pigmentation and skin rejuvenation, CLENZIderm for persistent acne, Obagi-C clinically reviewed for antioxidant brightening, and ELASTIderm for restoring elasticity and firmness. Each system is backed by decades of clinical research and is prescribed by clinicians worldwide. As a prescribing clinic, we can tailor your system with advanced-protocol actives — including Advanced-Protocol Retinoid and prescription depigmenting agent — that are not available over the counter.

Clinician's Recommendation

Choosing the right Obagi system matters more than choosing individual products. Nu-Derm is my first recommendation for patients with pigmentation, melasma, or general skin rejuvenation — it's the most comprehensive system Obagi makes. For acne-prone skin, CLENZIderm is unmatched at clearing breakouts without stripping the barrier. Obagi-C clinically reviewed is ideal for patients who want antioxidant brightening without a full transformation protocol, and ELASTIderm targets loss of firmness — particularly around the eyes and neck. If you're unsure which system fits your skin, book a consultation. Getting this decision right at the start saves time, money, and delivers significantly better results than mixing individual products.

  • Prescription depigmenting agent

The most effective topical depigmenting agent available. Prescription depigmenting agent inhibits tyrosinase — the enzyme that drives melanin production — reducing excess pigment at the source. It is the core active in the Obagi Nu-Derm system and remains the gold standard for treating moderate to severe hyperpigmentation and melasma. Available by prescription through our clinic.

  • Benzoyl Peroxide

The cornerstone of the CLENZIderm system. Benzoyl peroxide kills acne-causing bacteria (C. acnes) on contact and helps unclog pores by dissolving excess sebum and dead skin cells. Obagi's solubilised formulation penetrates deeper into the follicle than standard benzoyl peroxide products, delivering more effective treatment with less surface irritation.

  • Bi-Mineral Contour Complex

Obagi's proprietary blend of zinc and copper — key minerals that support elastin and collagen production. This complex is the active technology behind the ELASTIderm system, clinically shown to improve skin elasticity and firmness. It targets the structural proteins responsible for keeping skin taut and resilient, particularly effective around the delicate eye and neck areas.

  • L-Ascorbic Acid

Pure vitamin C in its most potent and bioavailable form. L-ascorbic acid is the active in the Obagi-C Rx system and the Professional-C Serum range. It provides powerful antioxidant protection, brightens skin tone by inhibiting melanin production, and supports collagen synthesis. Obagi formulates at pharmaceutical-grade concentrations (10–20%) for maximum clinical efficacy.

How Obagi Systems Work — Transformation & Maintenance

Transformation Phase (Weeks 1–12): This is where the work happens. Your skin undergoes a controlled process of accelerated cell turnover. Expect some redness, dryness, and peeling in the first 4–6 weeks — this is normal and a sign that the system is working. During this phase, use all products in the system exactly as directed by your clinician. Most patients see significant visible improvement by weeks 8–12.

Maintenance Phase (Ongoing): Once your skin has transformed, you'll transition to a simplified maintenance protocol to preserve your results. This typically involves a reduced-frequency retinoid, continued vitamin C, and daily SPF. Your clinician will guide the transition and adjust your routine as your skin evolves. The key to lasting results is consistency — Obagi systems are designed for long-term skin health, not quick fixes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Obagi Systems

Which Obagi system is right for me?

It depends on your primary skin concern. Nu-Derm is best for pigmentation, melasma, uneven skin tone, and general skin rejuvenation. CLENZIderm is designed specifically for acne-prone skin — persistent breakouts, congestion, and oily skin. Obagi-C clinically reviewed is ideal if you want potent antioxidant brightening without a full transformation protocol. ELASTIderm targets loss of firmness and elasticity, particularly around the eyes and neck. If you have multiple concerns, a consultation is the fastest way to determine the right starting point — we often combine elements from different systems into a personalised protocol.

How long is a typical Obagi protocol?

The active transformation phase typically lasts 12–18 weeks, depending on the system and your skin's response. Nu-Derm protocols generally run 12–18 weeks before transitioning to maintenance. CLENZIderm usually shows significant improvement within 8–12 weeks. During the transformation phase, your skin undergoes controlled cell turnover — expect some temporary redness, dryness, and peeling in the early weeks. This is normal and a sign the system is working. After the transformation phase, you'll move to a simplified maintenance protocol to preserve your results long-term.

Can I use individual Obagi products without the full system?

You can — and certain standalone Obagi products like the Professional-C Serum and ELASTIderm Eye Cream work well on their own. However, the systems are designed so that each product enhances the effectiveness of the others. Using the full Nu-Derm system, for example, delivers significantly better results for pigmentation than using just one or two products from the range. You can browse the individual Nu-Derm products if you need to replenish specific steps. If budget is a concern, we can prioritise the most impactful products in a consultation and build up to the full system over time.

Do Obagi systems require a prescription?

Some products within the systems are prescription-only — particularly Advanced-Protocol Retinoid (used in Nu-Derm and other protocols) and prescription depigmenting agent at higher concentrations. The core system products (cleansers, toners, moisturisers, sunscreens) are available over the counter. However, the advanced-protocol actives are what make Obagi systems so effective compared to high-street alternatives. As a prescribing clinic, we can assess your suitability for prescription products during a free written skin assessment and issue prescriptions where appropriate.

What's the difference between Obagi advanced-protocol (subject to clinical assessment) and Fx products?

Rx products contain advanced-protocol ingredients (such as Advanced-Protocol Retinoid or higher-concentration prescription depigmenting agent) and require a clinician consultation before purchase. They deliver the strongest results and are recommended for patients with moderate to severe concerns. Fx products are the non-prescription alternatives — they use cosmeceutical-grade actives like retinol, arbutin, and lower-concentration vitamin C. Fx products are effective but work more gradually. In many cases, we start patients on Rx-strength products during the transformation phase and transition to Fx for long-term maintenance.
