Collection: Obagi Hydration

Hydration is the foundation of healthy skin. Obagi's moisturising range includes Hydrate, Hydrate Luxe, and the lightweight Hydrate gel cream — each formulated with biomimetic technology to restore and maintain the skin's moisture barrier throughout the day.

Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and post-procedure skin.

Obagi Hydration — Medical-Grade Moisture & Barrier Repair

Effective hydration is the cornerstone of healthy skin — yet most over-the-counter moisturisers offer only superficial, short-lived relief. Obagi Medical's hydration range is engineered differently, using biomimetic technology and clinically proven humectants to restore moisture at a deeper, more sustained level. From the flagship Hydrate facial moisturiser to the lightweight Hydro-Drops advanced hydrating serum, every product in this collection is designed to strengthen the skin barrier, lock in moisture, and create the optimal environment for active ingredients to perform. For skin with compromised barrier function, pair these products with our sensitivity and barrier repair collection for a comprehensive approach.

As an Independent Nurse Prescriber, I see compromised hydration and impaired barrier function in the majority of patients I assess — often worsened by incorrect product use or harsh actives applied without adequate moisture support. Obagi's hydration products are formulated to work seamlessly alongside advanced protocols including Advanced-Protocol Retinoid and prescription depigmenting agent, providing the protective moisture layer that keeps active protocols tolerable and effective. Whether your skin is naturally dry, sensitised by treatment, or simply in need of a reliable daily moisturiser, this range delivers expert-selected hydration you can trust. Clinician's Pick — Mark Taylor, MSurg, INP, RMN

For most skin types: I recommend Obagi Hydrate as my go-to daily moisturiser. Its Hydromanil technology provides up to 8 hours of continuous hydration and it layers beautifully under SPF and makeup without heaviness or congestion.

For advanced hydrating support: Obagi Hydro-Drops is an exceptional hydrating serum that uses biomimetic technology to deliver deep, sustained moisture. I layer it under Hydrate for patients with significant dehydration or those experiencing dryness from active treatments like Advanced-Protocol Retinoid.

For dry or mature skin: Obagi Hydrate Luxe offers a richer, more occlusive formula with shea butter and biomimetic peptides. It is particularly effective for patients over 50 or those with chronically dry skin who need intensive overnight moisture repair.

  • Hydromanil

A biomimetic moisture complex derived from the Tara seed that mimics the skin's natural hydration mechanisms. Clinically shown to provide up to 8 hours of continuous moisture delivery, Hydromanil works at multiple layers of the epidermis to restore and maintain optimal hydration levels.

  • Shea Butter

A rich emollient packed with fatty acids and vitamins A and E. Shea butter reinforces the skin's lipid barrier, prevents transepidermal water loss, and delivers deep conditioning without clogging pores. It is a key component of Hydrate Luxe's intensive overnight repair formula.

  • Glycerin

One of the most effective and well-tolerated humectants available, glycerin draws water from the environment and deeper skin layers into the stratum corneum. It provides immediate hydration, improves skin texture, and supports barrier function — forming the backbone of Obagi's hydration formulations.

  • Hyaluronic Acid

A naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan capable of holding up to 1000 times its weight in water. In Obagi's formulations, multi-weight hyaluronic acid hydrates at different epidermal depths — larger molecules form a moisture-locking film on the surface while smaller fragments penetrate to plump and smooth from within.

How to Layer Hydration Products in Your Routine

AM Routine:
Step 1 — Cleanse: Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser.
Step 2 — Actives: Apply your vitamin C serum or other morning active.
Step 3 — Hydrating Serum: If using Hydro-Drops, apply now to damp skin for maximum absorption.
Step 4 — Moisturise: Apply Obagi Hydrate (or Hydrate Luxe for drier skin) to seal in moisture.
Step 5 — SPF: Finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30–50.

PM Routine:
After cleansing and applying your evening active (retinoid, treatment serum), layer Hydro-Drops followed by Hydrate or Hydrate Luxe. For skin on a Advanced-Protocol Retinoid, applying Hydrate before your retinoid can buffer irritation during the adjustment period — ask your clinician about this approach.

Obagi Hydration — Frequently Asked Questions

Which Obagi moisturiser is right for my skin type?

Obagi Hydrate is suitable for the majority of skin types — it is lightweight, non-comedogenic, and layers well under SPF and makeup. If you have oily or combination skin, Hydrate Light offers the same Hydromanil technology in a thinner, oil-free formula. For dry, mature, or severely dehydrated skin, Hydrate Luxe provides a richer, more occlusive barrier with shea butter and biomimetic peptides for intensive overnight repair.

Can I use Obagi Hydrate with active treatments?

Absolutely — Obagi's hydration range is specifically designed to complement active treatment protocols. Hydrate works alongside Advanced-Protocol Retinoid, vitamin C, prescription depigmenting agent, and other advanced-protocol actives including retinoids. In fact, maintaining good hydration is essential when using potent actives, as it supports barrier function and reduces irritation. Apply your active first, allow it to absorb, then layer Hydrate on top.

What is the difference between Obagi Hydrate and Hydrate Luxe?

Obagi Hydrate is a lightweight, everyday moisturiser with Hydromanil technology — suitable for all skin types and ideal for morning use under SPF. Hydrate Luxe is a richer, more intensive formula that includes shea butter, mango butter, and Abyssinian oil for deep overnight repair. Luxe is best for dry or mature skin, or as a night cream when your skin needs extra barrier support. Many patients use Hydrate in the morning and Hydrate Luxe in the evening.

Do I need a separate hydrating serum as well as a moisturiser?

It depends on your level of dehydration and your treatment regimen. For most people, Obagi Hydrate alone provides sufficient daily moisture. However, if you are experiencing significant dryness — particularly from Advanced-Protocol Retinoid or other active treatments — layering Hydro-Drops underneath your moisturiser delivers an additional level of deep hydration. Hydro-Drops uses a biomimetic delivery system that works differently from the moisturiser, so the two are genuinely complementary rather than redundant.

Is Obagi Hydrate enough for very dry skin?

For very dry skin, I typically recommend either upgrading to Hydrate Luxe or layering Hydro-Drops under standard Hydrate. If your skin feels tight, flaky, or uncomfortable despite using Hydrate alone, the addition of a hydrating serum underneath — or switching to the Luxe formula — usually resolves the issue. If your primary concern is mature or ageing skin, our anti-ageing and firming collection pairs well with these hydrators. In severe cases of barrier impairment, we may also recommend a dedicated barrier repair product alongside your Obagi hydration. Book a consultation and we can assess your specific needs.
