Obagi Nu-Derm — Individual System Products
Obagi Nu-Derm is the flagship skin transformation system from Obagi Medical — a clinician-prescribed protocol designed to correct hyperpigmentation, melasma, and uneven tone at the cellular level. The system combines cleansers, toners, brightening agents, and corrective treatments that work synergistically to deliver results no single product can achieve on its own.
This collection contains the individual Nu-Derm products for patients already on the protocol who need to replenish specific steps. Each product plays a defined role in the system — from prepping the skin for active penetration to targeting melanin production and supporting barrier recovery. If you're new to Nu-Derm, we recommend starting with the complete Obagi system through a consultation rather than purchasing individual products.

Clinician's Recommendation
I always recommend starting with the complete Nu-Derm system rather than cherry-picking individual products. The system is designed so that each step prepares the skin for the next — the cleanser and toner optimise pH and penetration, the brightening agents target melanin at its source, and the corrective products accelerate turnover. Once you're established on the protocol, replenishing individual products as they run out makes perfect sense. But the initial results come from the system working as a whole.

Key Ingredients in the Nu-Derm System
-
Arbutin (Nu-Derm Fx System)
Arbutin is a naturally derived brightening agent found in the Nu-Derm Fx (non-prescription) range. It works by inhibiting tyrosinase — the enzyme that drives melanin production — without the regulatory restrictions of prescription depigmenting agent. Arbutin provides a gentler approach to pigmentation correction, suitable for mild to moderate hyperpigmentation and for long-term maintenance after completing a advanced-protocol protocol.
-
Prescription depigmenting agent (Obagi advanced-protocol pigmentation system System)
Prescription depigmenting agent is the most effective topical depigmenting agent available and forms the core of the advanced-protocol Obagi advanced-protocol pigmentation system system. It suppresses melanin production at the source by directly inhibiting tyrosinase activity. Prescribed at concentrations of 4%, it targets moderate to severe hyperpigmentation and melasma more aggressively than any over-the-counter alternative. Available through clinician consultation only.
-
Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid used in the Nu-Derm Exfoderm products to accelerate the removal of pigmented surface cells. By dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells, it promotes faster turnover and allows the brightening agents deeper in the protocol to penetrate more effectively. It also improves overall skin texture, smoothness, and radiance as a secondary benefit.
-
Phytic Acid
Phytic acid is a gentle antioxidant and chelating agent included in the Nu-Derm system for its ability to inhibit melanin formation through a different pathway to prescription depigmenting agent or arbutin. By chelating iron and copper ions that catalyse melanin production, it provides an additional layer of pigmentation control. It also offers mild exfoliating properties and helps brighten overall skin tone when used consistently as part of the system.
The Nu-Derm Daily Protocol — AM & PM
AM: Gentle Cleanser → Toner (Balancing Toner) → Brightening agent (Clear Fx or Blend Fx) → Exfoderm or Exfoderm Forte → Sun Shield SPF 50. Each step is applied in order, allowing a moment for absorption between layers.
PM: Gentle Cleanser → Toner (Balancing Toner) → Brightening agent (Clear Fx or Blend Fx) → Exfoderm or Exfoderm Forte → Advanced-Protocol Retinoid (as prescribed) → Hydrate or Hydrate Luxe moisturiser.
Products will run out at different rates depending on the area of application and how much you use. The cleanser, toner, and moisturiser typically need replenishing first. Maintain the full protocol — skipping steps reduces the system's effectiveness.
Frequently Asked Questions About Nu-Derm Products
Can I buy individual Nu-Derm products without the full system?
Yes — all the individual Nu-Derm products are available to purchase from this page. This is primarily intended for existing Nu-Derm users who need to replenish specific products as they run out. If you're new to Nu-Derm, we strongly recommend starting with the complete system through a consultation, as the products are designed to work synergistically and individual products deliver significantly better results when used within the full protocol.
What's the difference between Nu-Derm Fx and Obagi advanced-protocol pigmentation system?
Nu-Derm Fx is the non-prescription version of the system, using arbutin as its primary brightening agent. It's suitable for mild to moderate pigmentation and for long-term maintenance. Obagi advanced-protocol pigmentation system is the advanced-protocol version, containing prescription depigmenting agent — the most effective topical depigmenting agent available — for moderate to severe hyperpigmentation and melasma. The Rx system requires a clinician consultation and prescription. Both systems share the same cleansers, toners, and exfoliants; only the brightening agents differ.
Do I need all the products in the Nu-Derm system?
The system is designed so that each product plays a specific role — the cleanser and toner prepare the skin, the exfoliant accelerates cell turnover, the brightening agent targets melanin, and the Advanced-Protocol Retinoid drives deep cellular correction. Removing a step reduces the overall effectiveness of the protocol. That said, your clinician may adjust the protocol based on your skin type and tolerance. We'll advise you during consultation on exactly which products you need and whether any steps can be modified.
How long does a full Nu-Derm system last?
A complete Nu-Derm system typically lasts 3–4 months with consistent twice-daily use. Some products — particularly the cleanser, toner, and moisturiser — may run out slightly sooner because they're used more liberally. The brightening agents and exfoliants tend to last the full duration. Most patients complete their initial intensive phase (12–18 weeks) on one system, then transition to maintenance with individual product replenishment as needed.
When do I move from the active protocol to maintenance?
The transition from active treatment to maintenance is guided by your clinician and typically happens after 12–18 weeks on the full protocol, once your pigmentation has reached the desired level of correction. Maintenance usually involves stepping down from the Rx (prescription depigmenting agent) system to the Fx (arbutin) system, continuing Advanced-Protocol Retinoid at a reduced frequency, and maintaining strict daily SPF. Your clinician will assess your progress and advise on the right time to transition — this is one of the key benefits of having ongoing clinical support.
Can I use Nu-Derm products with other skincare brands?
The Nu-Derm system is formulated to work as a complete protocol, and mixing in products from other brands can interfere with the carefully balanced pH and active concentrations. However, a vitamin C serum (used in the morning before SPF) and a dedicated SPF are commonly added alongside the system. We'd advise against substituting any Nu-Derm step with an alternative product without discussing it with your clinician first, as this can compromise results.
