The CSA Philosophy — Vitamin C, Sunscreen & Vitamin A

CSA stands for three pillars of evidence-based skincare: vitamin C to protect, Sunscreen to shield, and vitamin A to renew. Developed by Medik8, this philosophy distils decades of dermatological research into a simple daily framework. Each pillar targets a fundamental mechanism of skin health — antioxidant defence, UV protection, and cellular renewal — and together they deliver results that no single product can match.

Whether you're new to clinical skincare or refining an existing routine, building around the CSA pillars gives you a scientifically grounded foundation. Every product in this collection supports one of the three pillars, making it easy to assemble a complete, balanced routine tailored to your skin.

Clinician's Recommendation

The CSA philosophy works because it's backed by decades of dermatological research and covers the three fundamental mechanisms of skin health. Vitamin C neutralises free radical damage before it starts, sunscreen prevents UV-induced degradation, and vitamin A accelerates repair and renewal at night. Most patients who commit to all three pillars see measurable improvements in tone, texture, and firmness within 8 to 12 weeks — results that single-product routines simply cannot replicate.

  • Vitamin C (Multiple Forms)

The C in CSA. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that neutralises free radicals generated by UV exposure and pollution. It also inhibits tyrosinase to brighten uneven tone and supports collagen synthesis. Medik8 offers multiple forms — L-ascorbic acid for maximum potency, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate for sensitive skin, and ethylated ascorbic acid for stability — so there's a vitamin C for every skin type.

  • Broad-Spectrum SPF

The S in CSA. Sunscreen is the single most important anti-ageing product you can use. UV radiation causes up to 80% of visible skin ageing — collagen breakdown, pigmentation, loss of elasticity — and undoes the benefits of every other active in your routine. Broad-spectrum SPF 30–50, applied daily and reapplied every 2 hours in direct sun, forms the non-negotiable shield in the CSA framework.

  • Retinaldehyde & Retinol (Vitamin A)

The A in CSA. Vitamin A derivatives accelerate cell turnover, stimulate collagen production, and refine skin texture. Medik8's Crystal Retinal uses retinaldehyde — one conversion step closer to retinoic acid than retinol — for faster results with good tolerability. A progressive strength system (1 through 20) allows you to build tolerance gradually, while a Advanced-Protocol Retinoid is available through consultation for maximum potency.

Your Daily CSA Routine — AM & PM

AM (C + S): Cleanse → Apply vitamin C serum (wait 1–2 minutes to absorb) → Moisturise if needed → Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 as your final step. Reapply SPF every 2 hours in direct sun.

PM (A): Double cleanse → Apply your vitamin A retinoid (Crystal Retinal or Advanced-Protocol Retinoid) to dry skin → Follow with a barrier-supporting moisturiser. Start with 2–3 nights per week and build up as your skin adjusts.

The CSA routine is intentionally simple. Two products in the morning, one active at night. Consistency is what delivers results — commit to this framework and you'll see measurable improvements in tone, texture, and firmness.

Frequently Asked Questions About CSA Skincare

What does CSA stand for?

CSA stands for vitamin C, Sunscreen, and vitamin A — the three pillars of evidence-based skincare championed by Medik8. Each pillar addresses a fundamental mechanism of skin health: vitamin C provides antioxidant protection against environmental damage, sunscreen shields against UV radiation (the primary cause of premature ageing), and vitamin A drives cellular renewal and collagen production. Together, they form the simplest effective framework for healthy, resilient skin.

Do I really need all three pillars?

Each pillar delivers benefits on its own, but the real power of CSA is in the combination. Vitamin C protects during the day, sunscreen prevents UV damage, and vitamin A repairs at night. Dropping one pillar leaves a gap in the framework — for example, using vitamin A without sunscreen exposes photosensitised skin to UV damage, and skipping vitamin C removes your primary antioxidant defence. For the best results, we recommend committing to all three.

What order should I apply CSA products?

In the morning, apply vitamin C serum first (after cleansing), allow it to absorb for a minute or two, then apply moisturiser if needed and finish with SPF as your last skincare step before makeup. In the evening, cleanse thoroughly, then apply your vitamin A retinoid to dry skin and follow with moisturiser. The rule of thumb is thinnest to thickest consistency, with SPF always last in the AM and retinoid as your key active in the PM.

Can I start all three pillars at once?

If your skin is not currently using active ingredients, we recommend introducing the pillars one at a time. Start with sunscreen (immediate benefit, zero adjustment period), add vitamin C after a week or two, then introduce vitamin A at the lowest strength 2–3 nights per week. This staged approach minimises irritation and lets you identify how your skin responds to each active. Most patients are using all three comfortably within 4–6 weeks.

Which products should I choose for each pillar?

For vitamin C, Medik8 C-Tetra is ideal for sensitive or beginner skin, while Super C Ferulic suits those wanting maximum antioxidant potency — browse the full vitamin C collection. For sunscreen, Medik8 Advanced Day Total Protect offers broad-spectrum SPF 30 with antioxidant support. For vitamin A, the Crystal Retinal range starts at strength 1 for beginners and goes up to 20 for experienced users — or book a consultation for Advanced-Protocol Retinoid. If you're unsure, our free written skin assessment will match the right product from each pillar to your skin type and goals.

How soon will I see results from a CSA routine?

Sunscreen provides immediate protection from day one. Vitamin C typically delivers a visible brightness boost within 2–4 weeks of consistent use. Vitamin A results build more gradually — expect initial improvements in texture and tone around 4–6 weeks, with more significant changes in fine lines, firmness, and overall skin quality at the 8–12 week mark. The CSA framework is a long-term investment, and results compound over months and years of consistent use.
