Obagi Elastiderm Décolletage System Explained: Neck & Chest Skincare
The neck and chest age faster than the face, and they almost always age visibly sooner. The skin is thinner, has fewer sebaceous glands, and — because most people stop their SPF at the jawline — it absorbs decades of UV damage the face is spared. By the time people notice it, the crêpey texture, horizontal bands, and patchy pigmentation feel entrenched.
Obagi's Elastiderm Décolletage System is one of the few clinical-grade ranges designed specifically for this neglected zone. This guide explains what's in it, how it works, and whether it's worth adding to your routine.
Why the neck and chest need their own system
Most anti-ageing skincare is designed for the face. It works, but you can't simply extend it downward and expect the same result — the décolletage behaves differently:
- Thinner skin. Fewer dermal layers mean less cushion against loss of elasticity.
- Fewer oil glands. Less natural lipid protection, so barrier function is weaker.
- More UV exposure. Open-necked clothing, jewellery, car driving — the chest receives UV in patterns the face doesn't.
- Repetitive movement. Constant flexion from head turning creates deep horizontal banding over time.
Standard moisturisers don't have the active-ingredient concentration to reverse this kind of damage. A dedicated system, formulated for the specific biology of the décolletage, does.
What's in the Elastiderm Décolletage System
The Elastiderm range is built around Obagi's bi-mineral complex — zinc and copper peptides — combined with malonic acid. The mineral complex supports elastin and collagen synthesis; malonic acid increases skin permeability so the active ingredients can reach the dermis, where elastic fibres live.
The Décolletage System is a two-product regimen:
Step 1: Elastiderm Décolletage Wrinkle Reducing Lotion
A prep step — applied first, it delivers retinol to start cellular turnover in the décolletage skin specifically. Retinol thickens the epidermis over time, improves pigment regulation, and primes the skin to absorb step two.
Step 2: Elastiderm Décolletage Skin Lightening Complex
The treatment step. Contains clinically reviewed brightening ingredient combined with the bi-mineral complex to address both pigmentation and elasticity at once. In the UK, because of its clinically reviewed brightening ingredient content, this product is prescription-only — it requires a qualified prescriber to dispense.
How long before you see results?
Obagi's own clinical testing suggests visible improvement within 8 to 12 weeks of consistent twice-daily use. In our own clinical experience:
- Pigmentation typically lifts first — often by week 6
- Texture and crêping improve around weeks 8–12 as retinol drives turnover
- Elasticity and firmness take the longest — 16 weeks plus
As with any retinoid-based regimen, consistency matters more than intensity. Twice a day, every day, is the standard.
Who should use it
The Elastiderm Décolletage System is most useful for:
- Horizontal neck lines and visible crêping
- Sun damage and uneven pigmentation on the chest
- Loss of firmness not yet advanced enough to warrant clinical tightening procedures
- Patients already using Obagi Nu-Derm on the face who want complementary treatment below the jawline
It's less suitable for deep folds or heavily photodamaged skin that has progressed past what topicals can address — in those cases, it can still be a useful maintenance step after a clinical intervention, but shouldn't be the sole treatment.
How to use it alongside your face routine
The décolletage system layers cleanly with most Obagi face regimens. In the morning: cleanse, apply vitamin C to face, apply the Elastiderm Décolletage lotion and lightening complex to neck and chest, then moisturise and SPF over the top. In the evening: cleanse, apply the décolletage system, then your face retinoid.
SPF is non-negotiable on the treated area. The clinically reviewed brightening ingredient in step two increases photosensitivity, and without SPF the treatment will actively make pigmentation worse.
Accessing it in the UK
Because the second step contains clinically reviewed brightening ingredient, the Décolletage System is prescription-only in the UK. It must be assessed and dispensed by a qualified prescriber after a consultation.
Stratum Clinic is an authorised Obagi Medical stockist and our founder is an Independent Nurse Prescriber. A consultation is free, typically takes 24–48 hours to turn around, and lets us match the system to your skin accurately.
